The Problems
Within the villages:
- Over 90% of adults are illiterate
- There is a low skills base for adults
- Villagers cannot afford school fees and equipment for their children
- Nursery education is desperately needed

There are many different tribes in the Gambia, each with its own language. Inevitably, when primary education begins at age 7, schooling is entirely in English. As their parents only speak tribal languages, the children in our villages desperately need nursery education where they can learn English ready for primary education.
What we are doing
Nursery School
Sam Mbollet now has its very own Nursery School within the village thanks to our Partners S.E.i.G.
Bantaba Community Centre
This is a covered area right in the centre of the village. It can be used for village meetings, Weddings and Naming ceremonies and we hope with additional funding, we can use this for Adult Literacy and Education as over 90% of the Adults in this village are illiterate.
Sponsorship
Through Tourists visits and kind donations over 100 children have received sponsorship which not only covers their school fee’s but also uniforms, shoes, underwear, socks, school bags, stationary, school feeding programme, multi vitamins as well as rice at the end of the school year.
Future Plans
Updated 14 February 2012
Nursery School
Most of the children in the village of Cheesay are not in school. A nursery school would give the younger children the stepping stone into education that they need and deserve.
Child Sponsorship
One child in Cheesay is being sponsored but there are many more who need the opportunities that education can give.
Sponsorship for a year provides a child with school fees, uniform, shoes, socks, underwear, school bag, required stationery, multi-vitamins and school meals.
In return sponsors receive a photo of the child, name, date of birth, family details and the end of year school report.
Sponsor a child for a year: £75
