The Problems
Within the villages:
- Malaria is a huge killer
- Drinking water is contaminated
- There is a lack of, or inadequate sanitation
- Many people suffer from intestinal worms
- There is a general lack of medical care, medicines and basic medical supplies
- Malnourishment is a significant problem
- The infant mortality rate is high
- Skin disease is prevalent because of a lack of basic hygiene
- Arthritis, bad teeth, eye cataracts etc. are common
From other sources
1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, roughly one-sixth of the world's population.
2.2 million people in developing countries, most of them children, die every year from diseases associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
Blue Planet Network
In this day and age, the statistics are seemingly unbelievable. 1.1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water, and nearly 2 million people die each year due to waterborne-related disease (90% of which are children under the age of 5)

What we are doing
Updated 14 February 2012
Nurses - FUNDING HAS RUN OUT - £25 per month
A Nurse has been funded to attend the village 3 days per week to undertake Clinics under a Mango Tree and to do sensitisation programs as in teaching the people how to use boiled salted water to cleanse wounds and injuries, treat sticky eyes and the likes.
GLOVE has funded of a local nurse for our 2nd Project Village of CHEESAY. We supply medicines to both project villages whenever we are able too.
We desparately need funding for a nurse - email if you can help!
Medical Supplies
These are provided in two ways:
- Donated and brought by visitors
- Purchased from GLOVE funds
We need dressings, bandages, antiseptic creams, blood pressure machines and other meidcla supplies and equipment. Contact Us for more details.
High Blood Pressure
We are currently focussing on over 55 year olds where there are many cases of untreated high blood pressure and tropical ulcers. We have two elders within the village and one is suffering from diabetes and leg ulcers and requires a lot of treatment and care.
Doctors & Nurses - Can you help?
We need doctors and nurses to come and work in the villages and health centres. By joining us for a short period of time you can help to improve general health in the rural areas and also the skills of Gambian nurses who are wanting to learn and be guided but don't have any support of mentoring available to them.
Future Plans for Cheesay
Updated 14 February 2012
Safe drinking water URGENTLY needed

The village of Cheesay does not have sufficient safe dinking water for the villagers.
Funds are desparately needed to put in a borehole, pump, water tower, tank and three or four taps.
Total Cost - £4000
Money raised - £3200
We need - £800
Mosquito Nets
We need a further 100 Mosquito nets for the village to ensure each bed space is covered with a treated mosquito net in order to reduce the number of deaths from Malaria.
We hope to achieve this before the next rainy season in June 2012
Approx Cost - £650
Malaria Medicines
We hope to be able to leave sufficient medicines to treat malaria within the village by the next rainy season in June 2012.
Approx Cost - £400
