The Human Stories

Our work in The Gambia is about making changes which affect the way people in the village communities live. It's about improving their quality of life.

As you browse our website you will see the many successes of the GLOVE Project.

On this page we would like to share some of the very human stories of individuals and their families.

Haddy

Haddy's  first baby died because she was left in labour for so long before reaching the clinic where she was then sent across the river to Banjul Hospital. GLOVE funded her medicines, her dressings and helped fund somewhere for her to stay in the local area before returning back to the harsh conditions of the village. Haddy has now given birth to a healthy baby girl.

Dislocated Hip

Jackie will never forget being taken to a little old gentleman who had had a fall and was in bed and in a lot of pain. He clearly had a dislocated hip which had been put back in place by the local medicine man and strapped with rags and pieces of wood to keep it in place. GLOVE funded some strong pain killers, called upon the Community Health Nurse who agreed to pay regular visits and give the pain killing injections. That old gentleman has made a remarkable recovery and is walking unaided – he admits though that his dancing days are finally over!

Strangulated Hernia

In April 2010 a dear old gentleman was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital with a strangulated hernia. He was sent home as it was a public holiday. Our founder was able to intervene and funded his life saving surgery from her own pocket. This man would most likely have died without this surgery. He continues to do well.
